OpenAI is adding visual display advertising to ChatGPT’s image-generation experience, extending its advertising business into one of the product’s most visual surfaces. TechCrunch reported on October 5 that the promotions are scheduled to begin appearing later this month in the United States, initially featuring products and services from a test group of advertisers.

The placement matters because the ads will arrive after a user’s generated-image results, rather than only alongside a conventional text exchange. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI says the promotions will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. The report does not specify the size of the initial advertiser group, the ad formats available to buyers, or a timetable for expansion beyond the United States.

A small test audience branches toward a larger, uncertain global reach.
The announced rollout is limited to the United States, while any wider expansion remains prospective.

The launch builds on OpenAI’s earlier introduction of advertising to support free and lower-cost subscription tiers. TechCrunch also noted that the company expanded ads to India in August. The new visual format is intended to give marketers more imagery-led ways to reach potential customers, although any global rollout remains prospective rather than guaranteed.

TechCrunch framed the move against a much larger commercial ambition: advertisers could eventually reach ChatGPT’s reported 1.2 billion weekly users if the format expands globally. For now, however, the announced program is a U.S.-only test. That distinction is important because the eventual audience, geographic reach, and business impact will depend on how the trial performs and how users respond.

OpenAI is pairing the new inventory with a broader measurement system. TechCrunch reported that the company’s click-attribution partner list includes AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV, Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. It also named Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL as partners for more advanced, full-funnel measurement.

Measurement tools and safety shields surround a generic advertising tile.
OpenAI is expanding attribution, experimentation, and brand-suitability partnerships alongside the new ad format.

The company is also working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based advertising experiments, according to the report. Separately, OpenAI is developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. Those efforts are meant to help advertisers assess the environment in which their promotions appear, an increasingly important question when ads are placed around generative content.

The user-experience tradeoff is unresolved. TechCrunch observed that visual promotions could be disruptive, while also raising the possibility that advertising may encourage some casual users to choose a paid, ad-free subscription. OpenAI’s stated separation between ads and answers addresses one concern, but the report offers no evidence yet about how prominently the units will appear or how people will react to them in practice.

Taken together, the image placements and the measurement partnerships show OpenAI trying to make ChatGPT a more conventional ad-supported business for users on free and lower-cost plans. The test also moves advertising closer to content creation itself: a generated image will now be followed by a commercial visual. Whether that becomes a durable revenue channel will depend on results that the initial U.S. rollout has yet to produce.
