Google is preparing to redraw the boundary between free and paid access to its Gemini models. Beginning October 9, people using Gemini without a paid subscription will be limited to Flash Lite, The Verge reported. Free users can currently choose among Flash Lite, the standard Flash model, and Gemini Pro, so the change removes two of the three model options now available at no charge.
The shift makes model selection itself a subscription benefit. Instead of letting free users move between lightweight, standard, and higher-end models, Google will reserve the standard Flash model for customers paying for Google AI Plus. That plan costs $4.99 per month, according to The Verge. Flash Lite will remain the sole option for users who stay on the free tier.

The entry-level paid plan is also losing capability. AI Plus subscribers will no longer receive access to Gemini Pro after the new arrangement takes effect. Google said those subscribers will receive an email explaining when their Pro access will end. The result is a two-step division: the free plan keeps Flash Lite, while AI Plus keeps standard Flash but no longer reaches the Pro model.
Gemini Pro and Google’s advanced Deep Think reasoning option will instead be limited to the company’s more expensive AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions. The Verge reported prices of $19.99 per month for AI Pro and $99.99 per month for AI Ultra. That places access to Google’s top-tier model and its more intensive reasoning mode behind a substantially higher monthly payment than the AI Plus plan.

Google is preserving another layer of user control across the models that remain available to each account. Users will still be able to select low, medium, or high effort levels for a model, according to the report. Higher effort settings can consume a user’s Gemini allowance more quickly, meaning subscribers will still balance response effort against usage limits even after their plan determines which models they can select.
For free users, the immediate effect is straightforward: after October 9, Gemini’s no-cost experience becomes a Flash Lite-only service. AI Plus customers retain a step up to standard Flash but lose Pro, while Pro and Ultra subscribers keep the broadest access. The restructuring turns Gemini’s model lineup into a clearer ladder of paid entitlements, with both model choice and reasoning depth increasingly tied to subscription level.
